FIN MOD 2 SLP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

FIN MOD 2 SLP - Essay Example However, given the pace of economic growth and the fears of double dip recession in US, the price increase may not be sustainable. Thus prices may decrease by some percentage, but it may not change by great percentage due to fears of double dip recession. The movement in stocks indicates that the stock prices have relatively swung over the period of last five years. Though it remained in stable zones for some period of time, however, most of the time, it remained volatile given the fact that the overall performance of the firm was volatile also due to the financial crisis. However, its recent performance has seen the firm’s revenue to sky rocket again and its prices also swung upward due to higher performance of the firm. However, given the strong fundamentals of the firm and its strong financial performance and industry dominance, stock may not be entirely termed as risky. Theoretically, any firm with strong fundamentals and unique industry position may not be termed as a risky business because of the stability in the earnings. It is, however, also important to note that FedEx may still be considered as going through its growth stage given the fact that means of logistics are continuously changing i.e. e-mails and social networking has now become a norm, and consumers prefer to use free methods of communication. However, in other segments of the business such as parcel delivery and logistics, FedEx still leads the way. Some of the alternative investments that may be available include investing in mutual funds, saving accounts, etc. The normal rates offered by the banks on savings account range of 4.5% to 3.5% depending upon the term of the deposits. However, this return may be good enough to force the investor not to go for equity futures as given the recent performance of the stock, the investor may lose money on the futures as price of the futures may go down. The Cause of WWI Essay Example for Free

The Cause of WWI Essay WWI started in 1914 and ended in 1918. WWI was known as the Great war before WW2 happened as it was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Also the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand has been blamed as the catalyst for WWI (Spielvogel Book). The major players in WWI were the Triple Entente- Britain, France, Russia and the Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy. The reason for the assassination was because of Nationalism, Militarism and the Alliance that played the biggest part. Learning about WWI helps us understand todays conflicts because for example the geographic lines that were drawn after WWI in the middle east is a huge driver of modern conflicts with the fall of the Ottoman empire and Persia, plus there is a lot of more facts that would help us understand more. Nationalism is a force that can be positive, together a nations people, or negative, from national pride resulting in negative conflicts (Norman 571). Sadly in this case, nationalism was a negative act that played a part in ass the assassination. National tensions had risen so high that even the slightest wrong doing of a nations rights by another might be considered a cause for war. Serbians wanted to expand the size of their country to include places outside Serbia that had ethnic Serbian populations living in them, what they want is a bigger country they will call Greater Serbia this will include places like Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, and would mean taking chunks out of other neighboring countries like Romania. They want all the Serbian people to live together in one country, but they dont want these people to move to the current Serbia they want Serbia to take over the countries that these people live in. Now the way nationalism played a role in the assassination is because if the Serb terrorists had not killed Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, Austria would have never declared war on Serbia. The reason why the Serb terrorists killed Franz Ferdinand was because they did not like an Austrian ruler ruling a Serb country thus making an act of nationalism. So that gives you a better understanding of why nationalism played a huge role in the assassination. One other major factor that played a major role in the assassination was Militarism. Militarism is the belief in having a strong army force and navy (Joll 575). This belief led to an arms race in Europe, which was when the countries were making more deadlier weapons than their rival nations. 65 million men were mobilized during WW1, and 8. 5 million were killed, 21 million were wounded, and 7. 7 million were POWs. So just over 1 in 7 soldiers were killed a further 1 in 3 were wounded and 1 in 9 were captured. So over half of all soldiers that took part were killed, wounded or captured. Britain was an island nation and thus wanted to rule the waves. militarism leads to suspicion and thus it was one of the causes. Also Eight to Ten million soldiers swallowed each other up and when they did they eat up all Europe more bare than any swarm (Engels 153). So now as you can see how militarism had a big affect on everyone in the assassination. The last factor that took place in the cause of the assassination was the alliance. The Alliance was probably the second biggest factor in the assassination because militarism was directly because of industrial revolution, and everyone had nationalism but alliances made it a world war (McCutcheon 566). Alliances drew everyone into a big fight when it should have been a internal issue. Europes major powers had been divided into the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France, and Russia). The alliance system did cause WWI to the extent of the size of the war by bringing and pulling countries in to the war. The triple alliance promised each country to provide military support in the case of war. When the Triple Entente was created, it did not ask for reciprocal arrangements for support, though it did allow a large variety of arrangements and negotiations to occur. One negotiation was the support in war though. Alliances pulled countries into the war because if they werent followed, a consequence of retaliation would be expected. The alliance system was a major cause of the assassination because it had produced preventable tensions, but was incapable to resolve long-term issues, and created unrealistic expectations among the countries involved. Nationalism, Militarism and Alliance were the major causes in the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Todays and WWI conflicts are similar in a way because back then there was a major revolution in military technology, but no change in tactics, and today we have adapted our tactics to our technology. Another way todays Conflicts and WWI have similarities is there was a lot of new Technology never seen before in world war 1 like tanks, machine guns and airplanes. Today there is new technology in the war against terrors. A difference between WWI and todays conflict is that back then we were fighting nations and alliances, today we are fighting for fanatic terrorists who take no regard towards any code of honor, Its all out kill. A nation will die when all the weapons are taken away (Zola 559). Learning about WWI does help us understand about todays conflicts in many ways.

Kitchen Conversations in Russia :: Russia Soviet Union Politics Essays

Kitchen Conversations in Russia Russians say, â€Å"Russia is a country of kitchen conversations.† From time to time people get together in the kitchen and hold long conversations. Using very ordinary attributes, Russian people created a unique custom that can tell a lot about Russian character, perhaps more than volumes of history books. Over the course of last century, â€Å"kitchen conversations† affected Russian society at all levels and became a symbol of freedom from communist thought control and Russian people’s dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in their country. A Russian proverb says: â€Å"we don’t value what we have and cry when we lose it.† Russian people recklessly lost their freedom when they gave the power to communists in 1917. Among the great many consequences of this upheaval was a major economic crisis, part of which was a massive housing shortage. As a result, millions of people were cramped into what was called â€Å"communal apartments.† Generally, those were large apartments with a long corridor that led to a kitchen, a bathroom and several bedrooms where different families used to live. Since they had to share a kitchen and a bathroom, they basically had to share their lives. Everything that happened in society and neighbors’ lives was discussed in the kitchen. Moreover, neighbors actively meddled in other neighbors’ lives, often without any permission. Malicious tricks and helping hands, peaceful coexistence and furious quarrels, ridiculous misunderstandings and deep compassion transformed the kitchen in a theater-like place where tragedy and comedy intertwined into farce and the audience shared heroes’ drama. Most people used to live like this for more than thirty years (some still live like this today) when the government decided to build more housing in the 1950s and families in communal apartments were gradually resettled into single-family apartments. New apartments had a small kitchen and no dining room, but people gathered in the kitchen anyway. First of all, people thought about the kitchen as a common area where it was convenient to spend their free time. Secondly, people got used to talking about important events in their life in the kitchen. Lastly, small kitchen space made people physically closer to each other, which created informal and sincere atmosphere and gave them freedom to speak openly without regard to communist authority. Factors and Hazards of Infant Development Essay

Author’s note: This essay is a summary of my beliefs of the three most hazards factors in the early stages of Infant Development. This essay is for Mrs. Hacker’s EC100/EEC1700 Section 07 Foundations of Child Development Course. Factors and Hazards of Infant Development There is nothing more precious in life, than hearing your baby heartbeat or feeling it kick for the first time. Mothers and fathers to be should be aware of various hazards that can play a major factor in the development of their infant. The three factors that I feel are the most hazardous are alcohol, smoking, and drugs of any kind. In this essay, I will try to explain to you why these factors are very important to be avoided before and during pregnancy. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can have serious consequences for mother and the developing fetus (O’ Leary et al., 2010). If a mother is consuming alcohol during pregnancy she can have a miscarriage, stillbirth, low-birth weight, or a premature infant (ACP CS-EBK for Developmental Profiles, pg. 58). A developing fetus consumes whatever the mother puts into her mouth and body. Alcohol is a teratogen that has irreversible effects on infant development. There are several birth defects that a mother who drinks should be aware of; they are fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASDs) fetal alcohol syndrome, hyperactivity, heart defects, facial deformities, and speech impairment (Ismail et al., 2010). A mother who drinks mild alcohol during pregnancy could cause their infant to suffer from fetal alcohol effect. Infants with this effect suffer from learning and behavior disorders. It is very important that a mother to be does not consume alcohol. If you care about your baby well-being do not drink during pregnancy. Smoking is a bad habit that’s hard to kick once started. Smoking is dangerous for pregnant women, kids, men, and women. Smoking can damage the lungs of the smoker, and also cause lung cancer to those who smoke for long periods of time. Many pregnant women continue to smoke despite the warning on the U.S. Surgeon General label. Maternal smoking has been linked to many fetal malformations and birth complications (Ashford et al., 2010). Cigarette smoke contains harmful substances, which can harm a person body. These harmful substances are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. All the substances can harm an undeveloped fetus if consumed throughout pregnancy. Mothers who smoke during birth are at risk for having infants who suffer from asthma, allergies, and it can cause SIDS. Prescription and nonprescription medications, pesticides, fertilizer, and street drugs are very dangerous during pregnancy (Mattison, 2010). These drugs and chemicals can have many adverse effects on developing fetuses. It can cause SIDS, miscarriages, stillbirth, and numerous birth deformities to the undeveloped fetus. Drugs of any kind should be avoided during pregnancy, to ensure a better chance of having a healthy fetus. There are many reasons a mother to be should be cautious about the environment and the things she consumes during pregnancy. The best care a mother to be can give to her undeveloped fetus is to eat right, get adequate rest, and regular check-ups, which can better ensure the birth of a beautiful, healthy baby. Alton towers key customer market segments Essay

Alton towers target a wide range of customers as they have a lot to offer for different people, gender doesn’t come into this I don’t think as boys and girls both enjoy rides. They target families as they cant just target children as children cant get all the way to Alton towers and pay for it as well, they try and draw the parents in as they will be paying for the children. Also Alton towers have a big target market on ‘thrill seekers’ that’s ages 16-60+ I would say and this is the people that really want to have a amazing time who love the biggest fastest and the most scary rides and Alton towers target them because they also come in groups just like families. Alton towers marketing team have to make new rides appeal to all ages this includes thrill seekers and families, men and women. Or if the new rides are just designed for little ones then families would be aimed at. The reason they target certain people is because they know who would rather go on big headliner rides all day to the people who would rather go on more chilled rides like log flume and rapids. How they do this is making rides for everyone for example ‘oblivion’ that is a ride that thrill seekers will love as is big, fast and gives you that great buzz afterwards. Groups and groups of customers come to Alton towers day in day out, some stay over night in the hotel, which is another service they offer. Alton towers are aiming to give all customers and experience and a day to remember by offering what someone would want on a good day out, spa treatments for all those people who want to chill and relax, a water park for anyone wanting a exciting day on big slides and the main factor the theme park. And even a conference center for anyone who needs to have a discussion about business. Alton towers try to provide as much as they can and always want to know what they can do to make themselves better, every car in the car park is targeted with a questionnaire to see if they had a good visit and what can they do to make it better. Alton towers do things very good especially when advertising, for example in  2010 Alton towers created a new ride called ‘THIRTEEN’ this is a ride many people all over the UK and the world would want to ride, the way they let people know about this ride is let the customers advertise it for them, they put a little ad in a relatively small newspaper, this is so who ever read the newspaper would see the ad and would know that Alton towers are making a new ride. But what’s the first thing you do when you see something like that, you tell your friends or you post on social media, it wasn’t long until it was on the news and everyone found out about the new ride. Every thrill seeker around the UK or anywhere else wanted to go on this new ride and try it out. The ride cost Alton towers  £15,000,000 but because of all the people that want to go on this ride they were not worried about how much it cost them as they new the this first free fall roller-coaster was going to be a big hit and bring the money it cost back to the business. The reason that Alton towers have marketing segments is that they need to know who there aiming their rides at and what they need to do to make them have a good experience on the ride, so when aiming at youths they will make fast rides with loops or spirals and try to give them a buzz but for younger children they have to have something a little slower and age friendly as young kids will be too young to be going on the big rides so the rides like log flume and sonic spinball will feel to them like something major and that’s what Alton towers have created. Alton towers know that new rides means new customers as different people appeal to different rides by creating new rides and attractions this will invite more potential customers to the resort. Customer wouldn’t be coming back as regular if there wasn’t as many new rides or facilities on offer, but on the other hand if you look at what they have you realize that the rides are amazing and the things they have to do there are great and that’s why so many families and tourists visit the resort. Task two Now I’m going to talk about what Alton towers can do to get more customers by making new a new futuristic ride for all those thrill seekers looking for something new. So I’m going to devise and new marketing mix for a new ride  but I will also be taking into consideration the key market segments. I have made a decision that I’m going to base my new marketing mix on a futuristic ride for thrill seekers and the reason I’m doing this as Alton towers have all these big rides but I think they need that one ride that isn’t the same old spirals and loops, I’m going to create a ride that has speed loops spirals to create a G-force feeling like nemesis but improved and with a slight difference. The reason I’m targeting thrill seekers is because I think this is what going to blow their minds when it comes to a good ride. So the marketing mix, the marketing mix is a combination of the four P’s product price promotion and place, these are the things you need to consider when creating a new ride or facilities. This method is how you show your customers what the product or service is, also you need to be able to draw them in by advertising it well and letting them know what they would be missing out on. Product: The product that is going to be offered to the customers is going to be called ‘EROS’ this is a new hi-tech futuristic ride which will push you to the edge of intenseness. This is the king of rides for thrill seekers compacting everything you would want in a ride into one. This product will attract any thrill seeker form around the world as if you want an experience like Alton towers want to give you then you will want to be on the ride as soon as you can. The appearance of the ride will be massive, Alton towers agreed to the council nearby that they would go above tree height so the ride stay no higher than them, but don’t let this make you think its small because it takes up a lot of room. The ride will look like a futuristic shuttle that is covered in LED lights and things that you wouldn’t usually see but you know they are high-tech. When the safety barrier comes down over your head a futuristic mask comes down over your head as well seeing all the futuristic out of space things you wouldn’t usually expect in 3D. You will feel like you cant move off your seat the g-force is that strong and you  wont even see the spirals coming because of the intense speed. The one thing that people will say when they get off that ride is ‘wow’ the ride has different settings so that its not the same experience each time so by this I mean when you have the mask over your head you will see different things each time and the ride will feel like a new experience to you each time. Price: The ride won’t cost anything more than what Alton towers would usually charge so the customer is getting a new experience for the same price as you would pay to go on the other rides at the theme park. Obviously Alton towers will do special offers and family deals to try and invite more customers, for example if your bring a family of 4 you could get a 1 fast track ticket to the front of ‘EROS’. The ride will bring people from all round to try it out. To attract a larger amount of customers Alton towers could provide deals. If the ride is advertised correctly and becomes a big hit and the overall daily amount of customers increases then this could lead to the entry price being raised and greater marketing opportunities for Alton towers to add the name of the ride to their advertising which in turn could bring more visitors to Alton towers overall and increase revenue. Promotion: The way that the customers are going to be informed about the ride is in a minor way to start off as you don’t want to spill the beans to fast, you need to tease the target audience before so the word gets around. So around the resort their will be little hints, for example a picture of a futuristic background on a poster to leave small clues. Communications mix of TV, radio, digital and press will be used to make sure that customers will know about the ride, Alton towers like to tease the audience, this is so they get excited about going on the ride and cant wait to have the experience. When the ride is advertised on TV it will be on after programs that young adults will watch as a lot of young adults use social media this will also provide another way of the word getting around about the ride. Place: Place, the ride will be located on the resort in a new area with lots of space so that when it is opened it is made to look like the biggest ride and look like a headliner. How you do this is not put rides right next to it and make sure the logo is well seeable. This is because when you see it Alton towers want you to get that shiver down your spine that makes buzz. Also space will be needed so that when the ride is opened there is space for cues because if the advertising is done correctly then when the ride is opened their will be a big cue this is good as the more people you get on the ride the more customers have a great experience. The target audience for this ride is thrill seekers, I want all those people who buzz of going on big rides that are intense and make all those little roller coasters look like toys. The way it is advertised will determine how you thrill seekers react so if you make it look like its fast extreme and on a different level of fun then the target market will love it. Age doesn’t matter when it comes to thrill seekers because its who ever loves big rides and loves a new experience of fun and exciting rides. Gender also doesn’t matter as boys and girls and boys like rides so you can single one of them out. The ride will be aimed at any ages that are tall enough to ride it and who ever dare’s to experience this intense ride. I will aim all advertisement directly at thrill seekers those people who buzz of the rides and I will have a logo of the ride that will make the thrill seekers think that the new ride is going to taunt them and push them to there limits of thrill. It will totally directed to people who want to get that thrill so it wont be a family friendly ride it will be more directed at tens and those people who come to the park for every new ride and make sure they go on every main ride there and try to have the most thrilling day they can.

German Immigration To Midwest Essays - American Culture, Free Essays

German Immigration To Midwest Essays - American Culture, Free Essays German Immigration To Midwest The day I left home, my mother came with me to the railroad station. When we said goodbye, she said it was just like seeing me go into my casket, I never saw her again. So is the story of Julia B. from Germany and many others who left their life and love for a chance of happiness in a new country. This is the story of the German immigrants in 1880-1930 who risked everything on a dream of better things. What caused the German immigration to Ameica between 1870-1930? In this paper I'll answer that question plus: what caused the movement, what happined to them when they arrived, and how did they adapt. I'll also tell some of the more gritty stuff by using intimate and detailed quotes used by many real immigrants who came to America anywhere from 1880 to 1930. As you read this, be prepared to learn what really happened to these immigrants and why the streets were paved with anything but gold. Today, many Germans live throughout the U.S.; especially in the mid-west. More likely then not, they came here in the late 1800's- 1900's. This would be because of the many revolutions in the 1860's and the poverty that almost always follows war. In one 20 year span in the late 1800's Germany went to war at least 7 times taking on neighboring countries such as: Austria, France, Belgium and Russia. Like I said, much money was spent on the war effort in Germany. People were taxed heavily just to buy bullets for the army. Through all this, word was spread like wild fire through Germany that a new country in the west across the water was offering freedom and a promise of happiness for anyone who would make the long journey to the new country: America. So with somewhat heavy hearts, many men and women left their families behind to journey to America in hopes of something greater. For many, the road to America was a hard one. Most of the emigrants were very poor and had to hitchhike or walk the long miles to the coast just to be able to get on the boat to America. Sometimes it would take months just to save up enough money to pay for rides out of Germany, expensive passports, and to pay for the boat fare and it would take weeks just to go to France where they usually only began the long hard trip to their destination. By this time there were steam-ships (a better way to America then just regular ships which took 1-3 months to cross the Atlantic) which took only a merciful two weeks to travel the Atlantic. The bad news for the immigrants was that they were expensive and they had to crowed on to each ship; over 500 people over the limit. Neither cleanliness, decency, nor comfort, is possible... sometimes two or three thousand persons are crowded into a space hardly sufficient to accommodate 1,200. Steerage passengers can not, with any degree of truth or justice, be said to be humanly or properly treated at any stage of their long journey, said one Report of Conditions. After about two weeks of pain and misfortune, the many people on these boats glanced across the water and looked at the best thing they had seen in weeks, the Statue of Liberty. The first time I saw the Statue all the people were rushing to the side of the boat 'look at her, look at her,' and in all kinds of languages. 'There she is, there she is,' like it was somebody who was greeting them, said one women. A few hours after reaching the Statue they were rushed off of the boat into a place they called Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the main immigration depot to America located just off the coast of New York City. It was a place where thousands of people coming from dozens of countries came through every day. To me, it was like a House of Babel. Because there were so many languages and so many people and everybody huddled together. And it was so full of fear, the impression Ellis made on a young women. Immigrants were

DeStalinization - A Wise Political Strategy essays

DeStalinization - A Wise Political Strategy essays Although many of his ideas did not bring the expected results, Nikita Khrushchev policies of de-Stalinization were politically wise. He went against many of Stalin's tyrannical policies and gave the people a much greater sense of freedom. In the process known as "de-Stalinization", legal procedures were restored, some greater degree of meaningful public controversy was permitted, forced labor camps were closed and the secret police tactics of Stalin's era were erased. Stalin's method of personal rule was replaced by group rule and more orderly processes of government, the terror apparatus was largely dismantled, the economy was notably modernized and foreign policy was conducted with much greater diplomatic initiative and flexibility. There was free political discussion, a standard forty-hour work week where people were free to change jobs, better government planning on production, and eased travel restrictions over the "Iron Curtain". In the process of de-Stalinization the cities that were once named in honor of Stalin were given new names or returned to their old names1. The statues and pictures of Stalin were destroyed and letters were sent to families of those who were killed in battle, which criticized Stalin's weak leadership during the time of the war. Stalin's grave was vandalized during this process, and Khrushchev gained approval from the West. These policies were used to erase the past and ease the minds of those who suffered under the dictator2. Khrushchev worked to denounce his former leaders doings and clean up the image of the nation on a worldwide scale. Khrushchev worked hard to be agreeable with the majority of people he ruled. He sought to contrast his own present policies with the extremities of Stalinism, and therefore restore public confidence in the Soviet system.3 Perhaps the most notable example of de-Stalinization was where Khrushchev denounced Stalin and criticized the dictator along with tho...

Should broadcasters be required to accept advocacy advertising Research Paper

Should broadcasters be required to accept advocacy advertising - Research Paper Example It is the duty of the media to convey only the facts to the public. If media has some interests in exaggerating certain issues or hiding certain issues, the public will never get the exact dimensions of such issues. In other words, public may become forced to take wrong stands on issues if they get inadequate information. For example, Obama’s bailout package or healthcare reform policies may have lot of advantages and disadvantages. It is the duty of the media to convey both the merits and demerits of these policies to the public. If the media tries to focus more on either the merit or the demerit, the public will not get the actual picture about these polices. In an advocacy advertising campaign, â€Å"although separate displays may be taken within a campaign are to different audiences, each of these advertisements should communicate the same central message of the campaign†(The Essentials of Advocacy Advertising, n. d). In short, advocacy advertising forces broadcaste rs to spread the same message to the audience through different types of advertising. Thus the audience or the public will get the same content in different forms while broadcasters engage in a advocacy advertising.

By the project’s end, all 400 computers located in the company’s 30 locations situated around England should be running on Windows 7. The computers presently are of varied types and specifications, and by project’s end should be running on Windows 7 without compromising or unduly interrupting the regular workload. The project shall provide the context for discussion, but a full blown analysis is not attempted at this point. Prescribed Project Management Tools This section provides a cursory examination of the traditional project managem ent tools and comment on their applicable use in the context of this project. The traditional tools that will be discussed are the Gantt chart, the PERT method, the Logic Network, the Product Breakdown Structure, and the Work Breakdown Structure. ... In contemporary use, the importance of the Gantt chart as an industry standard is that the time and functional interdependencies of the various tasks are rendered immediately visible (Haughey, 2011). In the figure following, a Gantt chart is presented that may well serve as the initial conceptualization of the project plan. Here it is assumed that the group of six technicians will work in two teams, each team having one member that is familiar with end user requirements. Each of the teams will address half or the 30 locations, and each location can be addressed in two days (including travelling time). The initial schedule is thus laid out in the Gantt chart for one team. Author created The above chart is tentative and not executable for lack of additional data. If the tasks for each location could be broken down further (e.g. hardware modification, software installation, troubleshooting, etc.) and scheduled, e a more detailed and reliable chart results. Even in its tentative state, t hough, it already presents a useful rendition of the work intended and points out what other information are necessary to obtain. Logic Network The Logic Network depicts the series of activities that a project undergoes. The logical and sequential relationships of tasks are emphasized, and may provide information such as the critical path and the important milestones of the project. As with the Gantt chart, the dependencies are established between the timescale, the project elements, and the workflow ((Haughey, 2011). Author created For this case, the Logic Network shown above pertains to the activity of each team for each trip it takes to one of the 15 locations scheduled for it. In the team, a group of three

In the Kitchen Essay Example for Free

In the Kitchen Essay The kitchen that is being discussed in the story means two different things. The first meaning is the part of the author’s house where the author’s mother prepare and cook their food, and where the whole family of the author spend most of their time together. The other meaning of the kitchen in this story is as the kinky hair at the back of a person’s head where the neck meets the shirt collar. The kitchen as part of the author’s house has been memorable to their family since this is where they spent most of their time together. It is in this room where they took their bath in their galvanized tub, where their mother washed their clothes, and where their mother did her hair. However, we will deal with the aspect of the kitchen as the kinky hair. The kitchen as the kinky hair at the back of their head is usually the main concern of most of the African American. This kitchen is very important to these people because of the perception of â€Å"good† and â€Å"bad† hair. In those days, â€Å"good† means straight hair, while â€Å"bad† hair means kinky hair. Most people wanted to have â€Å"good† hair. They exert almost all kinds of effort in order to have â€Å"good† hair that even people of today still do. The author’s mother heats fine tooth instrument with wooden handle over their gas stove to straighten her hair, with the help of Bergamot oil. Some used stocking cap which is made up of a pair of stocking cut into about six or more inches with an open end on one side and a knotted end on the other side. Nowadays, hair still remains to be the number one concern of many African American people. Even people with non-kinky hair resort to hair straightening process and products to achieve silky smooth straight hair. As a conclusion, the term kitchen in this essay pertains to hair as assimilation or adjustment in order to be accepted by their society without much discrimination. Most people believed that hair, as a crowning glory, is an important source of identity. It shows what kind of a person one is, where he/she came from, and it even shows the financial and racial status of a person. Work Cited Gates, H. L. , In the Kitchen. USA: MacMillan, 1997.

Nora’s Relationship with Torvald Essay -- A Dolls House Relationships

Nora’s Relationship with Torvald The drastic change in Nora’s relationship with Torvald that occurs during the course of the play is made quite evident by what she says and the way she delivers her speech. At the beginning of the play Nora seems completely happy with her doll-like relationship with Torvald. She responds affectionately to Torvald’s teasing and plays along with him – â€Å"if you only knew what expenses we skylarks and squirrels have, Torvald†. She is quite happy to be Torvald’s â€Å"little featherbrain†. However, as the play continues, Nora starts to realise that her marriage has been a performance and that she needs her own freedom. She becomes more rebellious, starts to use the imperative with Torvald and somewhat abandons her childlike language. As the play reaches its end, Nora becomes totally independent from Torvald and talks to him from equal to equal, not daughter to father. At the beginning of the play, Nora’s relationship with Torvald seems that of a child with her father. She is patronised, called a â€Å"little squirrel†, a â€Å"skylark† and accused of being a â€Å"spendthrift† because she can’t save money although she seems quite happy to be called so as she doesn’t complain about it and even plays along - when Torvald says â€Å"scampering about like a little squirrel?† she just answers â€Å"yes† instead of complaining about being treated like a little girl. When Torvald asks her â€Å"what do they call little birds who are always making money fly?† she answers â€Å"yes, I know, spendthrifts† as if she had been taught that lesson many times because she is so childish that she keeps on making the same mistake. She never contradicts her husband – â€Å"very well, Torvald, if you say so† – asks for his approval like a... ...and that â€Å"it’s no good your forbidding me anything any longer† because she has freed herself. By the end of the play Nora has her own voice, not Torvald’s, she is no longer his doll that will do whatever he asks to please him, no longer his â€Å"little skylark† and â€Å"not the wife for you†. Over the course of the play, the alteration in Nora’s relationship with Torvald is made evident by the change in the way she speaks. At the beginning, she is his â€Å"little squirrel†, a childish â€Å"featherbrain† that is pampered and patronised by Torvald. The various turning points in the action, where Nora starts to change the way she speaks, using the imperative and contradicting Torvald start to show the change in the relationship that is completed by the end of the play, when Nora talks clearly to Torvald from equal to equal, having a voice of her own, no longer his doll.

Macbeth-Tragic Hero :: essays research papers

Macbeth-Tragic Hero   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As I finished reading Macbeth by William Shakespeare I realized the true reason that Macbeth is considered a tragic hero. Like all other tragic hero’s he had many good things going for him in his life before he messes with self- destructing things and threw it all away.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Macbeth had a great marriage, he was Thane of Glamis, the people and the king respected him and he was well liked. He was a generally happy person without much greed or jealousy in his life. This was until evil and the devil overcame him. He started getting greedy and wanted more. Once the thought of being king entered his head and once he shared that with his wife, there was no turning back. He was bound to destruction.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Macbeth was weak because he allowed his wife saying that he was not a true man get to him. He had to prove to his wife that he was a man and his only way of doing that was through murder. Even though he had hesitations and second thoughts about it, he did it out of love for his wife and the possibility of his triumph; he may actually become king. He allowed this to become an obsession and he did end up killing Duncan, his king. This started him down the road of doom. He suddenly had a very evil streak that was never there before and this was revealed more often than ever. He began letting the evil take over and murdering more and more people thinking that he was only saving himself. What he did not realize was that he was only harming himself in the long run. He was driving himself mad and he was no longer himself.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Macbeth was just like other tragic hero’s such as Elvis Presley. Elvis had much going for him and he thought that the drugs and alcohol were helping him deal with his stress and fame but in the long run it killed him.

Case Study of Lehman Trikes

Lehman Trikes was engaging in a forward integration. They were able to obtain the front end parts needed for their trikes through their deal with Harley Davidson. Where other manufacturers were unwilling to provide these parts, Harley Davidson provided the parts and allowed Lehman to manufacture a completed product. Harley Davidson was engaging in a related diversification strategy. They were already selling motorized bikes but by including Lehman Trikes in the process they were able to sell a different type of bike, a three wheeled motorcycle, allowing them to reach new customers. Lehman had an opportunity to increase production in their manufacturing facilities. A major benefit to Lehman was the potential to gain a larger customer base by teaming with Harley Davidson brand and reputation. They would also benefit from the increase income provided by the manufacturing contract. With this business venture, Lehman also runs the risk of competing against themselves. Since they also produc e three wheeled motorcycles, the products they are producing for Harley Davidson could take away some potential customer do to the popularity of the Harley Davidson brand. Harley Davidson has the opportunity to sell an end product that is expertly built. By outsourcing the job to a company that is an expert in the field, Harley Davidson is able to market their bikes as a well built machine.A major benefit to Harley Davidson was labor provided by Lehman Trikes. They did not have to pay union workers, employed by Harley Davidson, for completion of the bikes but were able to outsource the work for a better rate. Harley Davidson also faces the competition of Lehman Trikes and other companies that Lehman has partnered with. Not only could the Harley Davidson trikes face competition with Lehman build trikes, but also with other trikes but by Lehman for other companies.Considering the state of the economy and its impact on the trike market, it was reasonable for Harley Davidson to bring pr oduction back into their own facilities. By working out a labor agreement with their workers, Harley Davidson was able to reduce cost for the production of its trikes. Lehman should begin pursuing another relationship similar to the Harley Davidson contract. Although they could potentially create more competition for themselves, they could also increased production and be able to increase business by taking on work for other companies.

Communication is a fundamental component promoting positive behaviour

In the secondary school scene, well-developed communicating accomplishments are an indispensable constituent of effectual schoolroom direction. They enable instructors to develop reciprocally respectful mutual interactions with pupils that serve to augment schoolroom experiences and results. Assorted characteristics and methods of communicating may be used to heighten interpersonal exchanges, promote effectual problem-solving and expedite struggle declaration. These are the critical edifice blocks that serve to construct trust and apprehension. Furthermore, the many factors involved in effectual communicating aid greatly in easing warm reciprocal student/teacher relationships and productive acquisition environments which in bend, foster positive behavior and larning results. ( Arthur-Kelly, Lyons, Butterfield & A ; Gordon, 2003 ) Many secondary school pupils perceive this clip period to be particularly disputing. Developmentally, such pupils are sing considerable upheaval as they begin to negociate the labyrinth to emotional, societal, physical and cognitive adulthood. The secondary school old ages are farther complicated as striplings begin to consolidate their sense of individuality, strive for greater liberty and freedom and their societal webs expand. These momentous alterations may do many pupils to stagger and fight both behaviourally and academically. Fortunately, through the usage of effectual interpersonal communicating techniques instructors are able to construct respectful, mutual relationships that bolster secondary pupils throughout this disruptive journey. ( Martin, 2010 ) Interpersonal communicating is a complex pattern that involves conveying and having messages. Spoken words are used to convey significance but the frequently unmarked non-verbal constituents of communicating are of equal importance and comprise at least 50 % of message content. Such constituents include oculus contact, paralinguistics, positioning and position, facial looks, gestures, propinquity and touch, personal visual aspect and communicating puting. These factors have tremendous potency to interfere with and falsify the significance of intended messages. As such, it is of paramount importance that instructors avoid doing rushed readings of pupil non-verbal behavior and besides pay attending to the congruity of their ain non-verbal communicating. Actions tend to talk louder than words so incongruous non-verbal communicating has the possible to earnestly undermine message unity and cause pupil confusion. ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) As stated by Charles ( 2000, pp. 48-49 ) â€Å" To a surprising grade, how you communicate determines your effectivity as a instructor. Relationships are built on communicating and easy destroyed by it. † Because so much of communicating has the possible to be misunderstood it is indispensable for instructors to use schemes that minimise the opportunity of this happening. One peculiarly effectual method is the usage of active hearing ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . Active hearing is non simply hearing but a much more purposeful action that involves being attentive, endeavoring to understand communicated concerns and emotions, clear uping through appropriate inquiring and back uping job resolution ( Weinstein, 2007 ) . During active hearing, the receiver of the message interprets what has been said and accurately reflects this back to look into apprehension of the talker ‘s concerns and associated feelings. This procedure enables the talker to experience acknowledged, supported and confident that they have been understood. It encourages the talker to go on showing, clear uping and earning support to work through issues constructively ( Geldard & A ; Geldard, 2007 ) . By utilizin g the active hearing technique, instructors send a strong message to pupils that they truly care. Congruently, caring, and particularly student perceptual experience of such, is an of import requirement for set uping the healthy relationships that promote positive behavior and academic results ( DeSantis King, Huebner, Suldo & A ; Valois, 2006 ) . 4 Several other communicating procedures may besides be used to heighten the active hearing procedure and to convey echt concern and lovingness to pupils. These include doing appropriate oculus contact by changing position to fit the degree of the talkers, utilizing congruous facial looks, using minimum verbal cues and persisting with active hearing until the talker feels ready to reason ( Weinstein, 2007 ) . Open inquiring is besides of import. This involves the preparation of inquiries that require more than a negative or affirmatory response. Such inquiring is peculiarly utile to convey to light antecedently inconsiderate issues and besides to clear up information. Additionally, it is an effectual manner of promoting ongoing conversation ( Geldard & A ; Geldard, 2007 ) . The combination of the abovementioned schemes efficaciously facilitate clear look and enhance listening truth during conversations. In secondary schoolroom state of affairss, nevertheless, it is frequently necessary to guarantee that intervention whilst conveying messages is eliminated every bit expeditiously as possible. In these state of affairss, self-asserting communicating is an plus ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . During self-asserting communicating, the rights of both the talker and the hearers are upheld, therefore cut downing intervention. This method of communication is neither inactive nor aggressive. Rather, pass oning assertively means showing messages in a no-nonsense mode that is straightforward, honest and unoffending ( Mohan, McGregor, Saunders & A ; Archee, 2008 ) . One such manner of communication is through the usage of I statements. I statements are a practical method for leting the talker to convey their message and at the same time do their demands known without encroaching on the rights of others. They are frequently peculiarly valuable as they alert the hearers to the talker ‘s religion in their cooperation without any associated threatening intensions ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . Assertive statements are by and large stated in three parts, to depict specific behaviors, to sketch feelings associated 5 with such behaviors and to exemplify the effects of such behaviors. They send a clear message to the receiver without hazard of discourtesy ( Mohan et al. , 2008 ) . Spoken calmly, I messages operate to supply valid, comprehensive feedback to pupils about the effects of their behavior in a respectful, non-intimidating manner ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . Despite the demonstrated efficiency of communicating procedures such as active hearing and self-asserting communicating, in secondary schoolrooms, the potency for struggles and unsolved jobs remains ever-present. Because of the emphasis and anxiousness that is frequently associated with the dramatic alterations experienced by striplings, that they may at times act with confusion as they try to joint their ideas and feelings. This may precipitate apparently inappropriate words and actions that may necessitate careful dialogue to decode and decide ( Brown, 2005 ) . Negotiation is a problem-solving communicating accomplishment that incorporates active hearing and self-asserting behavior. Basically, dialogue involves utilizing common regard and communicating devoid of intervention by such contaminations as high affectional provinces ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . In dialogue, six stairss are used to ease problem-solving. The first measure involves job designation utilizing I messages, unfastened inquiring and active hearing. Step two necessitates the designation of possible problem-solving options. This is facilitated through the collaborative listing of suggestions which are freely expressed and are neither evaluated nor censored ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . In measure four, this procedure is refined as stakeholders are provided with the chance to cancel any antecedently generated options that they find wholly unacceptable. Subsequently, in measure five the stripling selects their most favorable option which they believe is most likely to be successful and an understanding to implement this is established. Step six completes the process and involves holding on a clip period before the consequences of the solution are reviewed. During the reappraisal procedure, permanent 6 execution may be decided upon or in the instance of an disappointing result the dialogue process will be repeated ( Arthur-Kelly et al. , 2003 ) . Walsh ( 2004 ) alludes to the fact that during adolescence, emotional ordinance is still undergoing development. This is one account for what appears to be bad-mannered, unprompted and angry behavior that is sporadically demonstrated by striplings. Understanding by secondary instructors that striplings will at times make societal mistakes is highly wise and has tremendous potency to be relationship edifice, puting the phase for cooperation ( Brown, 2005 ) . Consistent, considered action on the portion of the secondary instructor leads to the edifice of trust that is built-in to respectful relationships. Likewise, appropriate and effectual communicating physiques common regard and is the foundation of all positive acquisition environments ( Brown, 2005 ) . All schoolroom larning occurs in the context of interpersonal interactions and this mutual agreement wields a powerful influence over the learning environment and associated pupil accomplishment. Effective communicating between inst ructors and pupils has a mutual consequence. Resultantly, it stands to ground that such interpersonal interactions are a critical constituent of positive schoolroom environment and associated enhanced behaviors and larning results ( Goh & A ; Fraser, 2000 ) . Much research exists to back up the impression that positive relationships between pupils and instructors enhances larning environments, taking to improved behavior and favorable acquisition results ( den Brok, Levy, Brekelmans & A ; Wubbels, 2006 ; Fraser & A ; Walberg, 2005 ; Urdan, & A ; Schoenfelder, 2006 ) . More peculiarly, pupil motive, larning and grade of conformity are preponderantly shaped by their perceptual experience of their relationship with their instructor ( den Brok, Levy, Brekelmans & A ; Wubbels, 2006 ) . During the turbid secondary school old ages pupils care a great trade about set uping positive relationships with their instructors and the degree of support this provides. As such, they respond 7 with far greater enthusiasm, pronounced battle and augmented attempt, both behaviourally and academically, when they perceive that their instructors care about them ( Urdan, & A ; Schoenfelder, 2006 ) . By utilizing effectual communicating accomplishments, instructors are equipped with the tools to leave this powerful belief in their pupils, therefore taking to respectful mutual relationships, positive acquisition environments and associated behavioral and academic growing. 8

French and Russian Revolution Essay

The years 1789 and 1917 held similarity in the fact that they were the beginning of years of utter chaos in Europe. In 1789, France was at the beginning of what was to be known as the French Revolution. And coincidentally so was Russia in 1917. These revolutions changed Europe in many ways, especially politically; the aftershocks were felt for decades after. Resemblances were held in the initiation execution, and follow-up; some differences did exist as well in the process. The wars of 1789 and 1917 held mainly social and political similarities as well as a few differences. The French revolution in 1789 evolved out of a state of fiscal crisis. France had lost copious amounts of money supporting the American Revolution. There was famine across the country; the peasants were unhappy. France had no money, and Louis XVI consulted an advisor on the issue. In the end, the Estates-General, a form of parliament, was born. The third estate, ordinary people, became frustrated and vowed at the Tennis Court Oath on June 20th, 1789; it can be considered a bottom-up revolution, beginning from the lower class. The Russian revolution emerged out of a similar scenario. There was widespread famine and poverty across Russia. Bloody Sunday in 1905, a demonstration marched towards the Winter Palace, was orchestrated by peasants, similarly another bottom-up case. In its wake, Tsar Nicholas II implemented the Duma, a form of parliament, in an attempt to solve the crisis. Demonstrations continued until full revolution broke out in 1917. Also, Tsar Nicholas II, in an attempt to unite his country, placed Russia at war during WWI in 1914. This broke the state up even further; civilians found it humiliating because of the battles lost, famine continued to spread, and many people were dying. Similarities prior to the revolutions of France and Russia include financial crisis, implementation of a body of parliament in an attempt to solve the pending revolutionary crisis (both bodies are biased and end in dissolution), famine and/or bread riots, poverty, dissatisfaction among peasants, strain on resources because of involvement in other wars, initiation from the lower class (with unrest directed at nobility), and a monarchy controlled state. Another uncanny resemblance between the two beginnings of revolution would be the influence of literature. France had Voltaire and his contributions about the separation of church and state. Russia gained influence from Karl Marx and his ideas on Socialism in the Communist Manifesto. Similarities of the revolutions while they played out exist heavily as well. Foreign intervention occurred in both scenarios. In the Declaration of Pillnitz in 1791, Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire declared their support for Louis XVI by demanding his return to the throne. This resulted in France declaring war upon Prussia. In the Russian Revolution, Great Britain, America and France (Allied powers) intervened by joining the white side in opposition to communism. In both scenarios there is class tension. The revolutions were a split between parliament and street. In France, the Third Estate was against the monarchy after being shafted in the Estates-General. In Russia, the Soviets were not in favor of the Duma. The revolutions were not just a movement within parliament but within the public as well. The storming of Bastille on July 14, 1789 was an attack by the public on the state prison. The monarchy’s vulnerability is exposed for the first time. The storming of the Winter Palace in 1917 also demonstrates the public’s intervention on the monarchy. The period after the revolutions held similarities and differences. In the end, both monarchies were sentenced to death in France and Russia. King Louis XVI and his family are put to death; Tsar Nicholas II and his family are put to death. Both revolutions degenerated into civil war, a period of chaos. In France, the Reign of Terror resulted in thousands of civilians being killed. In Russia, after the war in the 1920’s, more civilians died because of poverty and famine than the First World War and the revolution combined. Both revolutions end in totalitarian governmental control. Napoleon emerged as the dictator in France. And Lenin came to power in Russia, which eventually the power went to Stalin. However, the differences that lie between these two revolutions are the goals. France was in search for a capitalistic democratic state and to abolish the current totalitarian one. On the other hand, Russia wanted a socialistic regime. They wanted communism. Ironically, the immedia te aftermath left both France and Russia with totalitarian governments, like their previous states. Eventually  however, the Soviet Union emerged as the first socialist state, while France eventually became a democracy. It is also important to note that in the aftermath of both these revolutions, each country entered center stage world politics. France became an important factor in WWI, and Russia became a major power on the globe, especially during the Cold War. While Russia and France pursued a revolution in pursuit of two very different goals- communism and democracy respectively, they both managed to create a totalitarian government again in the end. The revolutions hold mainly similarities amongst how they were initiated and executed. They even hold some similarities as well in the aftermath. Despite their minimal differences, they held a lot of the same ideas and problems. Both revolutions were events that changed Europe and the world in ways not only political, but social and economic as well.

Discussion and Planning Log Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Discussion and Planning Log - Assignment Example Nevertheless, Gunther offers useful tips that include being specific, addressing the topic, focusing on strengths, good communication, include authoritative links, and being formal. However, some tips like reading everything aloud before sending the email and using paragraph breaks are too basic for any writer to forget. Notably, Gunther would have helped the applicants by offering short, detailed, and positive advice without irritating them with his pride and all-knowing attitude. He should have started with appreciating the applicants for applying and include only the most important tips to shorten the letter. Having received other rejection letters, I think Gunthers approach was ineffective. The other rejection letters were short, objective, and communicated the unavailability of the applied position in a courteous manner. This letter should be shorter for the reader to develop some interest on its content. The letter should also be positive, sincere, courteous, and objective. The rudeness, emotions, and pride depicted in the letter discourage the applicants from appreciating its contents. This letter should advice the rejected applicants on how to write successful job application emails. The letter should also inform them of the reasons for their rejection in a short, sincere, polite, and positive manner. Addressing the letter to only the rejected applicants would be the most effective manner to help future job applicants. The letter should only include the most important tips. In writing the letter, I will consider the fact that the readers do not like long letters, hate a negative approach in writing, appreciate objectivity and sincere rejection, and need advice on how to apply for a job. The readers have prior knowledge of rejection letters after failures in applying for jobs. They know the contents, length, and tone of a rejection letter. However, they lack knowledge on unique rejection letters that define the reasons for a rejected

Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 4

Ethics - Essay Example In my view, the 1st Commandment which says that â€Å"Thou shalt not use a computer to harm people† is a reasonable one. Harming someone is generally disallowed either morally or legally, whether one uses a computer to do it or not. Harming someone is wrong under almost all ethical frameworks in almost all situations. Possible exceptions would be in the case of self defense. However, unlike in the real world, the gravity of the consequences in the context of the use of computers is unlikely to be as dire. As such, the exceptions provided in, say, the Penal laws of the various States which specify the criminal liability of a person would not apply in the same way in the context of the computer. Given the above, I agree with this 1st Commandment. I equally agree with the 4th Commandment which says that â€Å"Thou shalt not use the computer to steal†. The rationale behind my support of this Commandment is largely the same as that set out above in relation to the 1st Comman dment. Stealing, like harming, is already something prohibited both legally and morally. This Commandment as such merely reinforces the code of general ethics and the law already prevailing in relation to this same area. Stealing, just like harming, is wrong no matter how one does it or what one uses to do it. Stealing cannot and should not be less wrong just because it is done through a computer. Just as the various record companies in their advertisements against privacy emphasize, we would not steal a video from the video store†¦we shouldn’t steal that contents of that same video by illegally downloading it. The difference is that it feels less wrong because of the way it is done – usually at your own private place, using your own computer and no one seeming to get hurt. But the result is the same†¦it is stealing. I am in agreement with this 4th Commandment as it goes to emphasize this point†¦stealing through the use of computers is equally wrong as s tealing using your hands. The 9th Commandment is another one that I agree with. Thinking about the consequences of your actions is something that one must always do. The problem in the context of writing computer programs is that one gets absorbed into the codes and numbers and specifics without thinking about the real life impact of those codes and numbers. The fact that this Commandment serves to remind programmers that what they are doing has a real impact to real people, although it seems far removed at the time the programmer is writing the code, is important. I have agreed with the aforesaid Commandments because they merely reflect ethical principles already prevailing. However some of the other Commandments, while doing the same, fail to recognize that in the context of computers and the internet, they cannot hold absolute. For example, the 2nd and 3rd Commandments provide that one should not interfere with other peoples’ work or snoop in their files. In the context of computers and especially the internet, sometimes the whole purpose is to snoop and interfere. The various social networks, blogs, forums et.c are all based on people getting into each other’s business. The whole concept is based on snooping so to speak. In addition, in the context of the enforcement of the rest of the Commandments, just like the use of police powers in the real world to uphold the laws of a State, authorities must snoop and interfe

Chinese and Western Culture

Chinese and Western Culture I am going to start a series of discussions on cultural differences between Chinese and Western culture. Please keep in mind that I am not saying that all Chinese are like this or all Westerners are like this; I am talking only in generalities, referring to broad patterns. Obviously, there are many differences in specific individuals; and particularly as the rapid pace of development and change continues in China, the younger generation will tend to have significant changes. Nor am I saying that one way is good, and the other is bad; I personally believe that both sides have their strengths and weaknesses. But I believe that these are interesting topics for discussion, and can improve understanding and communication on both sides. Different nations have different cultures during the long developing history. Various cultural factors resulted in different language forms. According to observation, analysis, and study, the discrepancies between the Chinese and Western culture include culture of allusions, of numbers, of colors, etc.. It is an important issue to understand and handle the relationship between culture and language while translating English idioms. Meanwhile, language is not only the cultures important content but also the carrier of culture, so culture and language are a whole. Since different culture gives rise to alternative language structures, while translating, you must know its fundamental cultural obstacles, and then you can do translation more correctly and suitably. I.What is cultural difference? There are many meanings of the word culture. Sometimes, we say that people who know about music, art, and literature are cultured. However, for anthropologist, the word culture has a different meaning. To an anthropologist the word culture means all the ways that a group of people think, feel, art, and dress. The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English gives such an explanation of culture: the customs, beliefs, art, music, and all the other products of human thought made by a particular group of people at a particular time. Different nations hold different cultures. For instance, full moon symbolizes jubilation and reunion in China, and a bright moon in the sky makes people feel quiet and at leisure. Ideas of beauty differ from one culture to another. For example, the Flathead Indian of North America used to bind the heads of babies between board so they would have long sloping foreheads. In the Flathead culture, long sloping foreheads were beautiful. Other cultures might think that they are strange-looking and unattractive. For another example, when people die, different cultures deals with their bodies in different ways. Sometimes bodies are buried. Sometimes bodies are buried under the ground. In many cultures in the past, people were buried with food, weapons, and other things that might be useful in the next life. For instance, the ancient Egyptians buried people with little human figures which were from clay. This clay figure were intended to work the death person in the other world. From these examples, we can see that cultures are quite different from one country to another. It is brief that different people do the same things or consider the same things in different ways. Every country own itself cultural, cultural is countrys soul and its place of origin. In order to establish a good international relationship with others countries, so we are need to understand their cultural and find their differences with our country. Because With China entry the WTO and will hold the Olympic Games in 2008, the relationship between China and Western in politics, economy, culture will become more and more close. It is undoubtedly that the etiquette will play an important role in this process. To the definition of etiquette, China and Western have a different understanding. As Chinese thinks that the etiquette is the common behavior standards that all the members must obey, and its purpose is to keep the normal living order of the society. In ancient China, a famous philosopher thinks that etiquette is a principal to deal with the relationship between man and supernatural beings, man and ghosts, man and men. There are also many words about etiquette in English, therefore we need to understand the Chinese and western cultural differences. Culture is an integrated development course, whose soul is the cultural concept or idea. The author tries to study the cultural difference between Western and Chinese culture from the perspective of economical ethics and draw the conclusion that Chinese should critically assimilate Western culture and inherit traditional Chinese culture to create a new culture which fits the needs of the new era. The differences between Chinese and Western social initiatives First, by the family of the impact of ethical conduct, the Chinese people always put yourself in a group (ethics groups) to look at themselves in order to determine their own initiatives, bad sequence style.Only targeted by Professor Fei Xiaotong said, in such a poor sequence style, the individuals behavior so self-centered, but it only shows the starting point of individual initiatives.Indeed the basis for such a move from the starting point is on the basis of ethical conduct. Therefore, in China, the individual is basically digestion among the group.Group is the purpose of individual existence, but not the means.Groups of ethical conduct ordered, probably that group of patriarchal order that is the absolute ethical order.By the abstraction of rational conduct and the resulting impact of character and independence in the West, people always put themselves as a separate entity, the individual for their own survival and growth needs to unite to create groups and join groupsactivity.Ind ividual and group are mutually exclusive, is a Zuoquan connected.Although the unity of the individual in the group, but individuals are free to the balance of payments pursuant to Zuoquan groups.Although in order to achieve the advantages of the individual, the individual in the enjoyment of community empowerment must be accompanied by the group seriously, the implementation of the mission of the individual pairs of groups. Secondly, the family as a starting point of the structure of the difference sequence initiative, blood related initiatives has become an important frame of reference, by the Chinese peoples social initiatives have been given a dark mood of color In the social interaction or correspondence of the people first of all think about is the emotional intimacy of sexual, to consider the feelings of others on a thoughtful, considerate, and admire, that is, pay attention to human.Emotion and the Chinese people are Nanshe hard to leave, became the first requirement of life.China does not conform to the most is the indifference to human connection. In between in which people not only value the sentiment, but also sub-fur sentiment a letter, as long as with the emotions related to the incident will be hard to get much easier to handle more.Insinuation sets of feelings the Chinese people have become just as normal dealings consistent with the essentials. The emotional life, so that the formation of Chinese society, a humane society, but this has to society in the public and a moderate yield growth has brought endless variables. In the eyes of the Chinese people, whether private or public events, can all be factoring in the emotional front or modification.Law enforcement, the rules of human development, though should be a human face.In the West, as the ancient Greek philosophers, the human abstract, or because people go beyond the Christian right, people in the community initiatives either a rational as a guideline, or succumb to the call of God.Where the family connected, blood related, emotional connection is not the main peoples social initiatives, the only all thinking. This is important because of their emotional and non emotional drew a clear-cut between the boundaries, and boundaries of the two sides do not have to replace nature.Sentiment in the West essentially has been compressed into a very cramped area where, it is important the family is now living in the table. Cross-cultural communication, cultural differences, cultural conflict With Chinas gradual opening-up level of depth, Western society more and more people and things into our field of vision, in this case, the cross-domain, cross-ethnic, cross-cultural economic and social contacts will be increasing This provides us with many opportunities for contact and exchanges between the West, which for deepening our understanding of Western society is a good thing, but this is not a simple matter, because we are facing from the unfamiliar cultures and countries, ways of thinking, habits and behavior patterns with our very different people, in the process of interaction with the inevitable phenomenon of cultural conflict occurs. Western cross-cultural communication in the cultural conflicts that often appear inCross-cultural Communication in Chinese and Western cultural conflict occurs there are many, here we have it is impossible to describe, only the more common are listed in several. 1.1 The privacy of the conflict The Chinese concept of privacy is relatively weak, that the individual should be vested in a collective, together pay attention to unity and friendship, mutual interest and therefore I understand the Chinese people are often very willing to other peoples ups and downs, the other party is willing to frankly say so. The Westerners are a very good personal privacy, pay attention to personal space, too many people are reluctant to mention their own affairs, but also reluctant to allow others to interfere. Therefore, privacy issues on the two sides are frequent conflicts, such as: Chinese people tend to ask first met each others age, marital status, children, occupation, or income, in the eyes of the Chinese people it is an act of courtesy, but in the West the eyes of the view that these questions violated their privacy. 1.2 concept of time in the conflict Western concept of time and money concept is linked, time is money, the concept of deep-rooted, so they are very much value his time and of time in their lives often have done a careful arrangements and plans, and develop a good time to meet this woman habits. In the West, to visit someone, you must give advance notice or agreement, and explain the purpose of visit, time and place, it was agreed upon to proceed. The Chinese people belonged to more time to get used to the country, the use of time has great randomness, as Westerners are generally not as stringent as those according to plan, Westerners have often uncomfortable. 1.3 polite language in the conflict The Chinese emphasis on humility, in communication with others, the habit of humble have respect, and this as a virtue, it is a rich Chinese cultural characteristics courtesy of the phenomenon. Others praised us, we tend to be self-deprecating about it, in order to form modest and polite. Western countries have no such cultural practices, when they were praised, there will always am happy to say Thank you accepted. As the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, we believe that Westerners are too self-confident, without modesty; and when Westerners learn that the Chinese people who do deny others their own praise, or to hear their own deny their own achievements, even when their own derogatory worth a penny , would be very surprised that the Chinese people dishonest. 1.4 dining customs in the conflict Is known hospitality of the Chinese nations fine traditions. In the communication occasions and feast on the warm toast the Chinese people offering each other cigarettes are often each other. The Chinese banquet, even if a table filled with delicious food, the owner, he always used to say a few words, excuse me and other polite words. Sometimes the owner will use chopsticks to guests bowl Jia Cai, using a variety of ways to persuade customers more Chi cai more drink. In Western countries, people emphasis on respect for individual rights and personal privacy, so they will not do an imposing task. Dinner time, you will not be hard to bowl Jia Cai, Eat what you own, they would not use a variety of ways to persuade guests to drink, do not insisted until you have drunk. 2. Causes of cultural conflict caused by the phenomenon of inquiry Of conflict caused by the phenomenon of Chinese and Western cultures a variety of reasons, study its fundamental, it is because the two sides have different Chinese and Western cultures, different historical backgrounds, will inevitably bring about peoples thinking, behavior, and many other differences, or even conflict, here we come specifically look at What are the main reason. 2.1 The differences in thinking patterns Culture will affect peoples views and understanding of the outside world of things, different countries have different cultures, so there must be differences in thinking patterns, which is in the Eastern and Western culture has been particularly evident among. Western cultures focus on logic and analytical thinking, while the Oriental culture of thinking is to show integrity intuition, which is also the characteristics of traditional Chinese culture and thinking. Because of this the impact of traditional culture, Chinese people are often special attention to intuition and pay attention to recognize the process of experience and feeling, often in exchanges of experience and feeling to this to have relieve people. Compared with the Western mode of thinking, the Chinese people of this mode of thinking has obvious broad and vague nature of the passage of time, will develop a mindset that can be interpreted as recognition and to simplify the classification of things outside the process of perception. In essence, mindset, often ignore the individual differences of things, exaggerate a particular social group associated with the other cognitive attitudes, often with emotional and accompanied by a fixed creed. In all the set, some fixed potential is correct, while others are wrong, will directly affect the cross-cultural communication, resulting in communication failures. The specific meaning of a code of conduct refers to socially accepted by the ethical standards and codes of conduct, simply, is to tell people what to do and not do as a norm. People of different cultural background in communication, we often occurs a phenomenon is to apply its own code of conduct for the society to determine the reasonableness of each others behavior, due to differences in norms of both sides, often misleading, offensive or even worse results. For example, tapping the Chinese people, said the head of a child in a friendly, while in Western countries, this is a great lack of respect for the practice of children, parents would have very angry. So, in a cross-cultural communication is able to correctly identify and apply a code of conduct is to ensure the smooth progress of cross-cultural communication an important factor. To safeguard the smooth progress of cross-cultural communication, we must understand each others codes of conduct, in particular, what conduct is pr ohibited, the best way is to follow the principle of Romans do. 2.3 The values of different Peoples communicative competence is the process of socialization produced inevitably and values together. Every culture has its own unique value system, this system can help people distinguish between beauty and ugliness, good and evil, this is the peoples philosophy of life, moral standards and code of conduct. But it can not be divorced from the specific culture of the existence of criteria for judging every culture is different, this culture that it is good, another culture may think that bad, but they are in their own culture, and their existence within the system is reasonable, must not be understood as a standard of value is advanced, while another standard of value behind. In Chinese and Western cultures, for example, in Chinese culture, people respected modest chirye, the pursuit of adaptable and do not like assertive or aggressive, and social trends are often blocked too prominent individuals, are the so-called line above the masses, people will be non of. In Chinese culture , the collective orientation of the dominant, the pursuit of personal development is seen as a serious individualism, is bound to be condemned. Human-based thinking is rooted in their hearts, people advocating independent thinking, independent judgments, relying on their ability to achieve their personal interests, and that the supremacy of individual interests. 2. Therefore, every countrys advertisement businessman will think over the culture background of consumers. The aim of the paper is to lay out the influences to by comparing Chinese and Western advertising languages. II. The relationship between culture and language 2.1 The concept of the language and culture Culture is the all and the one which consist by social behavior, art, beliefs, customs transmission through society conduct and all other products of human work and thinking .Language is accompanied by the creation of the human society, it is the direct manifestation of thinking. Language reflects the characteristics of a nation, which not only includes the nations historical and cultural backgrounds, but holds on the nations view of life, the way of life and thinking. Culture is diverse, language is also varied (Chen, 2000:20).When the nation as a language, living areas, economic life and psychological stability community appears in the history of mankind, language is deeply stamped with the brand of a nation; it is the most typical characterization of the nation and national culture. 2.2 The relations of language and culture Language can not separate from related culture to be independent. Some sociologists believe that the language is the cornerstone of culture-no language, no culture. From another aspect, language is affected by language and reflected the culture. Language is based on the historical and cultural aspects. The nations way of thinking, values, concepts, habits and behavior will affect aesthetic language development. The formation of a national culture, development and absorption ought to pass the language to achieve. Language and culture influence each other; we should try to understand language and culture and to learn them. Language is like a mirror which reflects the entire culture, and every nation has its own culture. Language as the carrier and idea of culture, its representation form is influenced and restricted by culture. Understand their unique cultural background to understand the language features. Only more exposure to foreign cultures, familiar with different language nationa l history amorous feelings, way of life, value and national psychology, open up their vision, learn more about the cultural and language differences. Culture promotes the development of advertising language, the language of advertising propagandize its culture. Chinese and Western advertising language has its own unique form of language which contain the beautiful scenery of language and culture. The charm of the language of instruction is fully displayed in the advertisement. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Western social and cultural knowledge which contained in language make us experience the infinitude delight .Chinese and Western advertising languages let us deepen our understanding of foreign countries, and bring to the world of cross-cultural exchanges 2.3 Culture of numbers and translation Numbers are used here and there so that culture of numbers has come into being. Cultures are carried by language, and there are differences between the English and Chinese languages. The differences her I will mention is not the one of the figures calculation or arrangement, but the different phenomenon of idioms composed of numbers displayed in the two different cultures. As far as Chinese culture is concerned, there are numerous Chinese idioms and idiomatic usages with numbers, we are familiar with them: ;;,;;;,( «Ã‚ »),etc. If you want to translate these Chinese idioms into English literally, the version will not be accepted by western culture. For example, translate into one eye sees it all clearly; into seven mouths and eight tongues; into three longs and two shorts; no one will understand what does it really mean. And in English culture, there exists culture of numbers everywhere, which deals with many fields, showing that culture of numbers should be paid attention to, too. seven is holy and mysterious number which is regarded as a lucky numbers, if seven or nine times any of the odd numbers, and your age is one of them: 21,27,35,45,49,63,81, you will be considered as the one who has a dangerous time. The seventh son of ones seventh son is always accepted as an outstanding. And what is more, there are many idiomatic usages with seven in English culture. For instance, how do you translate this sentence into Chinese: Seventy times seven did I take counsel with my soul. Some one will translate it like this: ,but the right one should like this: Here seventy times seven can be translated into which comes from the Bible: Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, until seven times: but, until seventy times seven. From the above examples we can see that, either Chinese or English idioms with numbers, we should translate them freely for cultural differences exist everywhere. ?.The features of Chinese and Western advertisement Advertising, a kind of war as a modern business strategy and weapons, their purpose is commercial in nature, but its manifestations is a cultural and artistic.Emergence and development of advertising is the inevitable product of social development, the same time, is also a product of culture. Advertisement is the special performance of modern culture spirit. As a means of reflecting the reality, advertising language also is the component of culture. Advertisements adjust peoples activity or bring the society effect into play. Advertisement is a multi-language arts conveying information to people and using language for the carrier .Therefore, the advertising language should be simple and easily understood, fluency and clear, we should also pay attention to the rhetoric manner at the same time. Chinese and Western advertisement cited a variety of rhetoric to achieve the effect of merchandise promotion, and consumers are not consciously deepened the impression of the product after gaini ng the spirit edifying and enjoying aesthetic feeling, arousing peoples desire to buy it , such as antithesis, Hyperbole, Parody, metaphor, rhyme and repeatedly. Etc Owing to the differences of Chinese and Western culture, the representation form is diverse. Advertising language also manifests different culture values and thinking mode. Chinese and Western culture has large different culture background, customs, behavior conduct and way of life. Thus, advertisers will no doubt consider the demands of consumer through their cultural background. There I list some examples of advertisement to compare and analyze how the Chinese and Western national culture influence their advertising language: 3.1 Different Philosophy concept The Chinese nation has insists that the heaven and human units as the harmonious one. For example: something unexpected may happen any time, I have life insurance (The Peoples Insurance Company of China). This ad indicates that people are not afraid of accident because the people have insurance. The accident and insurance is a unit and are dispensable. That the business loves customs is showed in this ad and it will come to an agreement between them. At last the goal of the ad comes into truth. . But in western culture they insist the standpoint of pluralistic. They pay attention to diversity and changes of material, emphasis specially on the change and difference of the nature ,stressed that personal freedom, self-development and personal enterprise. The biggest different between harmonious and pluralists if that the pluralists is not limited. Look at this English ad:Olympus, No limits. There is little you cant be with the Olympus Zoom Lens Reflex series. The all-in-X cameras that wont limit your creative ability. (Olympus camera). The camera have one more features make photographs produce different then to reflect individual creativity is in the continuing development and is not limited in this ad. The advertisements show the ultimate challenge and seek freedom can greatly stimulate consumer desire so enthusiastic consumption. 3.2 Different cultural values-oriented Chinese cultural has a long history and the alcohol cultural is significant. To illustrate the quality of goods, they attempt to explain how long the water life by quotating the history. For example: (1) Legend quality, Century ZHANG YU.( ZHANG YU Tokay) (2) Tang palace drink, JIAN NAN CHUN (JIAN NAN CHUN Drink) Those two alcohols long history were given expression to only sentences, showing the deep feeling toward consumers, narrowing the gap between the products and consumers. The Western countries insisted the short term oriented culture; the main reason is the history is shorter than China. They dont do the business like Chinese who often use the factors of history and tradition, but use the strong and direct marketing strategy (hard sale), a product of the immediate results as a selling point. For example: go and get it at once, buy it , fit it well, take action right now, call now etc. is the common use in foreign ads . Value is the different views and attitudes of people regarding the matter. China is a traditional agricultural economy society, it is said that Chinese cultural system emphasized the collectivism and authoritative character, using the natural value orientation. This ad is a manifestation of this feature of Chinese culture: HUA LI killing mosquito tool-silence without mosquito dedication. This ad was excellent for using the partial tone of mosquito and listen. It builds the image of unknown to public dedication of products and corporation. To praises of the heroes of our community who quietly worked hard, this identity arouses the resonance in the minds of vast consumers. But in the Western capital society, individualism?equality and the dominant natural were the orientation ,they stress personality differences. This can be seen from many American ads products, there are many differences trying to explain from, even in the absence of any differences as well. In the United States ads, there is a popular phrase, it would be: to create different. For example: One airline painted the vivid colors on the airframe in order to catch peoples eye. In fact, the plane and service of other airplane company are not much different. 3.3 Different cultural psychology Advertiser often reflecting takes me the psychology and tries to appear the customers. Ads reflected the cultural psychology of language is quite common. Such as:1?congratulate to make a pile to welcome new year, have long luck Goldlion (Goldlion wearing advertisement); 2?WEI LI washing machine, dedicated to a mother. (WEI LI washing machine); the advertising language cater to the cultural psychology of Chinese, has persuaded function. Good fortune?salary?longevity ?happy and wealth were the symbol of Chinese traditional culture. Chinese have the psychology of hearing nice words, so many products related to the common use show menu of the family affection. For example: A lot of good luck, a lot of satisfaction (FU MAN DUO instant noodles) and A bowl nice glue ball round and round , a good reunion after eating (a advertisement of Chinese glutinous rice flour) are two types examples which emphasis Chinese value. In contrast, the Western culture takes more emphasis on independence and i ndividuality; their ads pay more attention to character display, ideas and humor. Kodak film and your family happiness Is a popular advertisement in Chinas market, but its ads in U.S is a picture of one boy holding ponchos in one hand, and the other standing on a sword with the statements. He just killed his last dragon. Kodak keeps happiness for Chinese, keep the feat for American. The whole world has a common human emotion, such as kinship, friendship and love, but
